Which fluoride filter do you need?

It’s certainly not easy to guess which fluoride water filter you need. There are a lot of factors to consider. We discussed those factors just below this review section.

Best Whole House RO Fluoride Filter – iSpring RCS5T 500 GPD Water Filter System

best reverse osmosis fluoride filter
View On Amazon

If you have a large household or a large house with many faucets, you should keep your eye on the iSpring RCS5T water filter system. The iSpring RCS5T water filter system is a reverse osmosis whole house water filter.

Size wise, the unit is pretty large measuring about 14 x 11 x 17.5 WDH. It will, however, fit under most standard under sink spaces.

Given its design, the iSpring RCS5T filter has a flow rate of about 500 gallons of water per day (500GDP). This amounts to roughly 0.34 gallons per minute.

The flow rate does fluctuate between 350 and 500 because of temperature and impurities in the water.

To increase flow rate and increase water availability, iSpring suggests adding a water holding tank after the unit where the clean water will be collected for onward distribution to the house.

The system is hinged on a metal frame whilst the filters that filter the water are housed in a plastic casing. This plastic casing is attached with screws to the metal frame.

One of the unique selling points of the iSpring RCS5T RO system is the dual RO membrane. The dual nature of the RO membrane makes it possible for the system to receive water from two sides.

In addition to that, the RO membrane is powered by a booster pump which requires a power source.

View Features and Pros/Cons

Features We Love

  • Moderate flow rate between 350 – 500 GPD
  • Removes up to 99% of fluoride.
  • Installation doesn’t require much technical knowledge.
  • Above average filter life.
  • Exceptionally good 1:1 drain ratio.

Pros

  • The iSpring RCS5T water filter removes up to 99% of fluoride and other contaminants from water.
  • It is very easy to install, thanks to a clear installation manual.
  • The filter life has a lifespan of about 2600 gallons.
  • Its 1:1 drain ration is good, compared to the drain ratio on some other models of the same class.
  • The flow rate is good and the unit can be paired with a small tank to provide water on demand at a faster flow rate.

Cons

  • You need to buy an extra tank for improved flow rate and provision of on-demand clean water.
  • More expensive than other fluoride filters.

iSpring designed the RCS5T to remove up to 1000 different chemicals. One of such is fluoride which we’re keen on removing.

The iSpring’s filters remove as much as 99% of fluoride and other pollutants – that’s what they claim. Their claim is somewhat true – the water tastes great with no chlorine smell and no hardness of water.

Even whilst it removes fluoride from the water, it maintains a moderate 1:1 drain ration. The drain ration refers to the amount of water lost for a gallon of water that is filtered.

Other pollutants that are removed by the unit include arsenic, lead, sulfur, pesticides, etc.

The filters of this iSpring RCS5T water filter have a filter life of about 2600 Gallons. This is hinged on the benchmark of a household using only 3 gallons of water per day. The time frame is pegged between 2 to 3 years.

There’s no doubt that the filter life may be shorter than the stipulated 2-3 years’ time frame.

For installation, the unit comes with as many components as needed for installation purposes. They include housings, filters, parts, faucet, as well as a mounting bracket.

It comes with an easy to install manual and if you follow the instructions, you will be able to install it in a jiffy.

The cost of this unit can make you think twice about it. If you want a similar product that removes fluoride, the APEC RO-90 Fluoride filter system, is a good choice for half the price.

However, with the APEC RO-90 fluoride filter, you get a paltry 90 gallons of water per day.

Best Fluoride Water Filter Pitcher – Aquagear Water Filter Pitcher

best fluoride water filter pitcher.
View On Amazon

The Aquagear water filter pitcher is one of the few water filter pitchers that removes fluoride. In fact, it removes about 90% of the fluoride, leaving you with good clean water.

Another water filter pitcher we recommend for removing fluoride is the Clearly Filtered water filter pitcher.

The Aquagear water filter pitcher has a negligible drawback – it has a flow rate that is a tad slower than some of the best water filter pitchers (without fluoride filters) that we’ve seen.

Nevertheless, it does hold up well to removing fluoride and other impurities from water.

The Aquagear water filter pitcher is compact sized and would definitely occupy nothing more than a small space on your table. It measures a paltry 10.9 x 10.8 x 5.4 inches.

Its white color makes it easy for the pitcher to blend effortlessly with the surrounding background.

Aquagear subjected this water filter pitcher to a plethora of tests before letting it leave the doors of their factory. Little wonder the unit comes with an NSF certification.

This certification goes a long way to support Aquagear’s claim of the filter pitcher being able to remove more contaminants than its counterpart water filter pitchers.

View Features and Pros/Cons

Features We Love

  • Comes with multiple action filters.
  • Small compact size yet has a 10 cup capacity.
  • Filters out up to 90% of fluoride.
  • Impressive filter life of 150 gallons.

Pros

  • The filter pitcher properly removes as much as 90% of the fluoride in your water.
  • It comes with a plethora of filters each dedicated to different water contaminants.
  • The pitcher has a 10 cup capacity yet it is still appropriately sized.
  • And of course, it has good filter life.

Cons

  • The filters are a tad expensive.

For dealing with fluoride, this Aquagear water filter pitcher sports a five stage filter. This five stage filter has two micron pores specially dedicated to the removal of fluoride and lead.

Replacing the filters is a breeze and they are also readily available.

Each filter has a lifespan of 150 gallons. This lifespan is pretty impressive considering the fact that some other similarly priced water filter pitchers have lower filter lifespan.

As a water filter pitcher, no installation is needed. You only need to change the filters in the pitcher regularly – after every 120 gallons or so. Also, we suggest washing with warm water once in a while to keep it looking clean and devoid of sticky impurities.

Best Fluoride Water Bottle – Seychelle Extreme Water Filter Bottle

best fluoride water bottle

Filter water bottles are a good way to ensure that you keep drinking clean water even when you’re not at home.

For removing fluoride from your water using a water bottle, we recommend the Seychelle Extreme filter water bottle. It’s the best design you’ll find on the market, however, it is one that gets fluoride and other contaminants out of the way.

The Seychelles extreme fluoride filter water bottle is tailored towards people who go camping, hiking or backpacking. It has strong build quality and that’s one important thing outdoor guys like.

It’s made of food grade materials that are EPA and FDA certified.

With respect to removing fluoride, the Seychelle extreme water bottle does a fairly good job. It removes as much as 90% of the fluoride in your water – it doesn’t end there. Other contaminants like chlorine, arsenic, odors, viruses etc. are removed.

View Features and Pros/Cons

Features We Love

  • Removes up to 90% of the fluoride in your water.
  • Compact sized and lightweight.
  • FDA and EPA certified.
  • Made from food grade materials.

Pros

  • The water bottle has a good filter life.
  • It has quality certifications.
  • Filters out 90% of the fluoride in your water.
  • Holds just about 28 oz of water.
  • The filter life is good.

Cons

  • Flow rate isn’t as fast as we expected.

The filters have a lifespan of about 100 gallons. This is definitely smaller than the filter lifespan of the Aquagear water filter pitcher we reviewed above – anyway, the two items belong to different classes.

Weight wise, the water bottle weighs a negligible 4.8 ounces when empty which slightly increases when it’s filled with water. This, of course, isn’t heavy enough to bring you discomfort.

The flow rate of the water bottle isn’t the best and you’ll have to do some slight squeezing to get the water out a little bit faster. Thankfully, the water bottle isn’t made of hard plastic material.

With respect to size, it’s comes in a small size and measures just about 9.5 x 3.5 x 3.5 inches. Don’t expect any extra colors from this unit.

Replacement filters for the water bottle are readily available and they are not as expensive as we saw on the Aquagear. Also, take a look at the EpicWater Fluoride Water Bottle.

We love the stainless steel finishing of the unit. It blends in well with the surrounding although it kind of stands out.

The Big Berkey gravity filter has a flow rate of about 2 GPM – a good flow rate, if you must say. It’s a tad above the flow rate of the Aquagear water filter pitcher that we reviewed above.

When measured hourly, the flow rate hovers just around 7 gallons per hour.

With respect to fluoride removal, the system removes about 95% of the fluoride. Of course, fluoride isn’t the only thing the filters remove. Other contaminants such as lead, mercury, pesticides, VOCs, etc. are all decisively dealt with.

best fluoride removing water distiller
View On Amazon

Lastly, we’ll take a look at the Megahome Countertop Water Distiller. It’s a well know truth that water distillation is one of the most reliable ways of removing fluoride and other impurities from water.

The Megahome Countertop water distiller is undeniably one of the most sought after water distillers. It’s certified by the UL as a compliant product which is safe to use.

Our review model dons a white color and comes with a white colored collection jar. As white as it is, it blends effortlessly with the surroundings of your kitchen countertop whilst the collection jar too sits pretty nicely beside it.

The Megahome water distiller is designed to distill one gallon of water every five and half hours at 212 degrees Fahrenheit. This distillation time is rather slow especially considering the fact that large households may have distilled water needs more frequently.

However, it’s worth the wait.

With respect to the removal of fluoride, the Megahome water distiller removes 99% of the fluoride in the water. In addition to that, impurities such as chlorine which turn into vapor during the distillation process are removed. The end result is clean distilled water.

Health Risks Posed By Fluoride

Image – How To Get Stuff

There has been a lot of debate as to whether fluoride causes any major health risks.

In fact, a research carried out by the Office of Scientific and Technical Information at the US Department of Energy shows that if fluoride is ingested internally, it may lead to health issues with the thyroid gland.

One may be tempted to ask if the presence of fluoride in toothpastes and mouth wash products poses any threats.

In this section of the article, we’ll try as much as possible to shed more light on the health risks posed by the ingestion of fluoride.

Rawls HR recently published a research with Nakamoto T. The purpose of this research was to determine if fluoride causes diseases if one is exposed to it early in life. At the end of their research, they made some good discoveries.

  1. Fluoride exposure may cause fluorosis of the enamel and skeleton.
  2. It raises the chances of a kid suffering a disease in the future.

Testing Water For Fluoride

There are quite a handful of ways to test your water for the presence of fluoride particles.

  1. Using a fluoride meter.
  2. Lab test.

To test water for fluoride, you can use any of the aforementioned methods. We recommend checking out a fluoride meter which is a great tool for checking fluoride levels in the water.

It’s worthy to note that some fluoride meters aren’t accurate and are sometimes pricey. In a situation where a lab test is less expensive than the fluoride meter, you should opt for the lab test.

You can also obtain the current fluoride level by visiting the municipality and requesting for it. Be sure to check that the information is recent.

How do you remove fluoride from water?

Image – Pixabay

There are several ways of removing fluoride from the water we drink. These methods are, however, peculiar to our need as well as some other factors.

For instance, a bachelor who lives in an apartment house alone may not have any need for a whole house water fluoride filter.

In the review above, we took a look at seven different products all with an aim to remove fluoride from our water. This clearly shows the various ways of removing fluoride from our water to include the use of

  1. Whole house fluoride water filters.
  2. Fluoride removing water filter pitchers.
  3. Water bottles with fluoride filters.
  4. The gravity fluoride filter.
  5. Fluoride removing shower filters.
  6. A countertop fluoride filter.
  7. Water distillers.

How effective are the aforementioned fluoride removal methods?

The fluoride filters mentioned above are certainly able to remove a great deal of fluoride – up to 99% – from your water.

Let’s have a look at each removal method, who they are suited for, and their advantages over the other types.

Reverse Osmosis Fluoride Filters

This set of filters are often designed to be installed at the water entry point into the house. Some are, however, designed for use at one point, but can easily be converted to a whole house filter.

The fluoridated water is filtered first before the clean water is then passed onto the house. This type of fluoride filter has a good flow rate and perhaps, a better filter life.

Installation is required for reverse osmosis fluoride filters. However, with clear concise installation guides that come with these filters, one can easily install them.

Let’s not fail to mention that reverse osmosis filters can come with either the TFC (thin film composite) membrane or the CTA (cellulose triacetate) membranes which removes about 93% and 80%+ of fluoride in water respectively.

Fluoride Removing Water Filter Pitchers

Given the size of a water filter pitcher, it suffices to say that they are meant to filter drinking water in a small household. A small household in this case refers to a household of one to four persons.

Fluoride removing water filter pitchers are great for filtering water from the tap in the house especially for people living in apartments that can’t install a whole house water filter.

No installation is required.

Fluoride Water Bottles

Apt for going outdoors, to work or to the gym, these water bottles come with filters that remove fluoride as you drink the water. Fluoride water bottles don’t usually have good flow rates and they hold limited amount of water.

If you live in a large household, you may need to get one for everyone in the house to ensure that they drink clean and fluoride free water outside the house.

No installation is required.

Using Gravity Fluoride Filters

The Big Berkey gravity fluoride filter is one popular filter that falls into this category of fluoride filters. Gravity fluoride filters have two chambers with a filtration section in between.

They are similar to water dispensers, but in this case, they have their own filters. Of course, they are suitable for large households.

No installation is required for this kind of filter.

Fluoride Shower Filters

Most times we forget to filter our shower water and end up with itches on our body, no thanks to the impurities from the water.

Shower filters serve as a means of removing impurities like fluoride from the water we use for bathing. There are only a few shower filters that can remove fluoride and we reviewed one of them above.

Shower filters require little to no plumbing knowledge for installation.

Countertop/Faucet Fluoride Filters

They are great for installing at the sinks across the house or just in the kitchen as the case may be. Countertop fluoride filters are compact sized and hence will take up negligible space.

You need little plumbing knowledge for installation.

Distillation

As we mentioned earlier, distillation is one of the best ways to get clean water. However, it isn’t always a cost-effective method hence, a lot of people look the other way round.

A distiller can remove as much as 99% of the impurities in your water including fluoride. However, it has a very slow flow rate – sometimes it distills only a gallon of water in about 5 hours.

Therefore, it’s suitable only for small households – one to two persons at most who care about pure water.

Distillers don’t require any installation. However, you need to ensure that the collection jar is made of glass instead of plastic.

FAQs – Fluoride Water Filters

Which Filters Don’t Remove Fluoride?

Water softening systems are sometimes advertised as fluoride removers.

Well, they remove just about a little percentage of the fluoride in water. This is poor when compared to the dedicated fluoride removal filters like the ones we reviewed.

Do water softeners remove fluoride?

As we mentioned above, water softeners remove only a tiny amount of fluoride from water. This stems primarily from the fact that water softeners are designed specifically to remove some minerals from water that cause water hardness.

So in essence, it doesn’t really remove fluoride.

Does boiling remove fluoride?

The simple answer is NO.

Here’s why.

When you try to boil water that contains fluoride, the water just keeps evaporating when it reaches its boiling point. The fluoride is then left behind in the boiling container. This increases the concentration of the fluoride in the container.

However, the distillation process uses a similar pattern to remove impurities from the water.

How?

The distillation unit boils the water at a very high temperature and then collects the vapor/steam which is now devoid of the impurities that were hitherto in the water.

It then channels back the steam and cools it down to form water again, this time in a separate compartment.

Unfortunately, this is a slow process and it requires a decent amount of energy to function properly. So if you’re using this distillation process at home, then you should expect an increase in your energy bills.

Does reverse osmosis remove fluoride?

Image – GoPureWater

Yes, reverse osmosis can be used to remove fluoride from water. However, this depends on the type of filters that the reverse osmosis system is fitted with. Not all reverse osmosis systems come with activated alumina filters which are helpful in removing fluoride.

Other Factors To Consider

Budget

Removing fluoride from water can drain your pocket if you don’t draw up a good budget.

For instance, if you buy a water distiller to remove fluoride, you’d have to take into consideration the amount of energy the distiller uses.

This is important considering the fact that it takes a distiller about 5 hours to distill just one gallon of water.

Having a distiller at home is a great idea, especially if you like to brew your beer at home. You’re certain of crystal clean water devoid of impurities that can affect your brewing.

With a good budget set aside, also take the following factors into consideration.

Number of people who need fluoride free water

If you’re living alone, a fluoride faucet water filter and a fluoride shower filter may work just fine for you.

However, the same cannot be said for a household with 2 kids and 3 pets. The water demand will increase and in turn, factors like flow rate and storage of the fluoride free water become important.

Thus, a whole house fluoride filter becomes necessary.

Installation

Only a handful of the fluoride filters we reviewed in this article require installation. Surprisingly, they are all easy to install, thanks to the installation guide from the manufacturers.

It is important to look out for units that are easy to install so you can save on installation costs.

Micron Size Of The Filters

This is important, however, a lot of people tend to overlook it.

A filter with a micron rating of about 1 micron will filter out more contaminants than another filter with a micron rating of 5.

However, the 5 micron filters are useful for removing large particle sediments from the water. The water then passes on to the 1 micron filter for onward removal of the tiny contaminants.

Portability

Portability is important for travelers or homeowners who intend to move soon or would like to take their fluoride water filters along with them when they travel to see their parents.

Fluoride filters like the Big Berkey and the water filter pitches will fit this need.

Again, if you work out in the gym frequently, a fluoride water bottle is a must-have companion in your gym bag.

Flow Rate

Water filtration can sometimes be a time consuming process. That’s fine, however, it ends up reducing the water flow rate.

For owners of whole house fluoride water filters, consider installing a mini tank where fluoride free water is stored for onward on-demand distribution to your entire house.

Other Expenses

When you’ve installed a fluoride filter, you may need to consider other expenses such as water, energy, and filter maintenance and replacements.

These are important things you shouldn’t neglect.

The expenses in the long run should be reasonably low.

In addition to that, things like filter replacement or maintenance of the installed systems shouldn’t be a tough nut to crack. Filters should be readily available as the case may be.

Final Words

Apart from the likelihood of causing diseases, fluoride intake may lead to brittleness of the bones as well as hypothyroidism.

When you rid your water of any of fluoride, you reduce the risks of having any of these aforementioned health issues.
